Scottish Power scam?

Got a letter today (addressed to Occupier) from Scottish Power saying that they are my electricity supplier and enclosed a form for me to give details of name, direct debit details etc. etc..
Thing is I have been a Scottish Hydro customer for years.
Is this some underhand scam trying to make me change suppliers?
By the way, Scottish Power would be the very last supplier that I would change to.

    That does sound suspicious.

Why ? My transfer to Scottish Power went smoothly, and have been impressed with the online billing system and automatic change of dd amount after entering meter readings.

I would phone up scottish power and ask them what mpan (supply number) they are referring to.

And see if it is the same number as on your existing bills. Is scottish hydro still the name on your bills?

Have they confused you with a similar address (eg a flat in the same building)

or you might want to phone mpas and confirm who your supplier really is. I would give them your meter serial number and confirm they have this at your address and ask them to confirm which supplier you are with.

    http://www.energylinx.co.uk/mpas_online.htm

    has an mpas list.

If your supply number starts 17 then you are northern scotland and 18 then southern scotland (assuming you are receiving bills with the correct supply number on of course!)
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

I've had trouble with Scottish Power before and wouldn't use them again.
Anniecave, I will go down the mpas route, although a few years ago, Scottish Power ignored the fact that mpas said they weren't my supplier in another unrelated dispute.
Scottish Hydro have been my supplier for several years. I have not applied to change supplier.

A bloke from Scottish Power knocked at my door today....he told me that he had been sent to "check" my electricity. Now normally I am very switched on and would have asked straight away what he meant BUT because I have not lived in the house for long I thought maybe he HAD:eek:, which was incredibly stupid of me. So I motioned him to the meter cupboard but he said no he hadnt come to read the meters as "Adrian did that yesterday". I replied that I was out all day yesterday, at which he tutted and wrote something down on the sheet of paper on his clipboard.

He then started talking about how I hadnt taken advantage of the de-regulation of gas and electricity during the past 14 weeks. THIS was when I twigged. I was too cross to think of taking his name but SURELY this is a scam and a lie. He hadnt been sent to check my electricity at all, he had come to try to get me to switch to SP.

When challenged he made his apologies and left. Straight away I went round to the elderly couple next door but he hadnt been to them, or else he had and they didnt hear the doorbell. I saw another rep further on round the estate later in the morning.

    Fuming.

I now have a 'no cold calls' sign on my door but it didn't stop 'sky' ringing my doorbell last week. Even after I pointed out the sign to her she said 'yes, I saw that' and yet still continued to waffle on.
