can I cancel credit card application?

Hi,
I recently applied for an RBS classic credit card, having previously held a student credit card with them. I did this over the phone and the guy gave me a credit limit and sent me out the agreement in principle for me to sign and send back. I thought that was all the security done, but when I received the papers to sign it says that the agreement will be valid after they 'process the application and carry out checks'. I then thought I'd check my credit rating to be sure everything was ok but when I tried to get the online reports from both Experian and Equifax both couldn't verify me even though I used the RBS student card (which i still use, not very often but in the few months i have) and the address it's registered to as my details. Now I'm a bit concerned something's up with the details the credit agencies hold for me as they told me to send in proof of ID and address. I dont have big amounts of credit but surely they should have that student credit card as a means to identify me? I am going to write to them and get the report that way but in the meantime, I'm not sure I should progress with the RBS credit card application. If something funny's happening with my report and I am declined that will affect me.
So my question is (sorry for the long story), is it possible to abandon the credit card application until I find out what's happening with my report? I have not signed the agreement or sent it to them yet (it says to do so by the 13th). Also, will that cancellation of the application affect me negatively? I know the credit search will stay on my records but I can't even access them at the moment to see what's going on. Or should I just go ahead with the application since i've had an agreement in principle?
Thanks.

It's a pity you didn't check your credit reports before you submitted your credit card application.

There's nothing to be gained from abandoning your application at this stage. As you say, the search is on file, so you may as well continue.

Are you on the electoral roll at your current address?

I would go ahead and send the id. You have nothing to lose.
Got Halifax Classic to reduce my interest rate by 5% woohoo - 10/06/08 Thanks MSE!

  • yes, I'm on the electoral roll, signed up around november. This is why Im finding this quite strange, especially since I already have a credit card account that I've had for 3-4 years.
If I were to abandon the application and re-apply lets say, 6 months down the line once I've sorted out what's happening with my credit reports, will RBS have it on record that I chose to cancel the application or will it just be down as a 'decline'?

Declines do not show. All that shows is your searches and details of your past and present lending, up to 6 years.

  • ok, so assuming I do send off the application agreement, are they likely to contact the credit agencies again or will the rest of the checks be internal?

When completing cc applications or contacting the CRAs, I would make sure your name and current address matches your details as they appear on the electoral register. Pay particular attention to the way first name(s) as well as surname are recorded. Also a line of your address may be inserted/omitted or the order reversed, where new build, a house name or a block of flats is involved. You'd be surprised how often this happens ;)

P.S. You can inspect the electoral roll at your nearest public library.

If you opted out of the edited register (which is sold to anyone who wants to buy and which may be viewed in a public library), you can check the full version at your local electoral registration office ;)

That's true, but it's pretty easy for a company to guess that you were declined, if a search is made but the product never held
