Multi room audio system - advice and ideas

Hi, I'm looking for ideas and advice on installing a simple multi-room audio solution. We are about to a self build so have the advantage we can include any wiring from the outset rather than having to do it retrospectively.
We don't want to do anything flash but if we can avoid having a separate hifi in each room, it would be great to centralise it.
We originally were looking at something like the Opus system which will support up to 4 zones with wall mounted LCD panels in each one that all runs of a central control system with 6 inputs however the music is stored on an ipod.
This will limit the ability to function independantly if everyone wants to listen to music stored on the ipod at the same time.
So we figured it would most likely be cheaper and give us more flexibility to use something like a media center and an amp in a cupboard somewhere and build our own system.
We'd like to to have the option to have between 4 and 6 "zones".
We have looked at wireless solutions but as we can install CAT5 or whatever cabling is required up front, we'd rather have a more reliable wired setup that we can add wirelessly to in the future than rely purely on wireless for the entire scheme.
Has anyone set up anything like this and are there any recommendations for the best scheme for doing this?
