Another laptop insurance problem

Can someone help please?

My partner recently damaged his laptop (left it on the floor and tripped over it!).

He put a claim in via his insurance from Abbey and the laptop was collected and taken away for assessment.

However, they are now refusing to progress any further with his claim until he provides them with the receipt for the laptop. Is this usual? His laptop is almost 3 years old and he has no idea where the receipt is! He has sent them manuals etc for his laptop, and shouldn't they be able to prove the laptop is his by looking at the hard drive?

It seems a bit unfair to have to provide a receipt. What if the house was badly damaged eg a fire - would they not pay out a thing because he had no receipts?!

Can anyone help?

The ombudsman will agree that if a receipt is not available that other proofs of ownership would be acceptable. This can be manuals, boxes, bank credit card statement showing payment going out or photos. (They are not duty bound to accept these but the Ombudsman will normally rule they should).

If you bought it from a big national shop eg PC World you can go in and ask for a duplicate receipt. They normally print it out there and then. .
