I need some help with advising my granddaughter.
She's coming to the end of her maternity leave/pay and was hoping not to return to work until after the baby was 12 months old (child is now 7 months). She and her partner thought they could easily manage this but last month he was made redundant.
In theory of course she could return to work, a minimum wage job, and her partner look after the child but this arrangement severely curtails his ability to seek work.
Would her becoming voluntarily unemployed and not immediately seeking work affect their benefit entitlement ?

Has she been offered redundacy?
Why can't she work and if she does over 16 hrs she can claim WTC. He wouldn't be entitled to JSA though if he is a stay at home dad!0 -
She would have to formally resign from her job.
The dilemma is that his earning potential is much greater than hers and if she were to return to work even part time they would lose their rent rebate/CT benefits and it's already taken a month to sort that out.0 -
What is her income?0

As far as I can make out her only income is child benefit and SMP...about £130/week.
The SMP ceases in a few weeks.0 -
Is she getting WTC at the mo?0
-
No WTC - she was getting some CTC until April but that seems to have stopped.0
