TomTom downloads - safe to download unofficial ones? And where do you find them??

 My hubbie having just purchased a TomTom 700 wants me to investigate downloads for him.

He is interested in the voice skins as there is only John Cleese available on the Tom Tom official website at the moment.

I have looked at the free one Martin is showing on the latest newsletter but I don't live in the area so the voice is unknown to me and I don't realy want it. I figured there must be other voice skins out there either free or pay per download. Does anyone know of any good ones?

During my search I did come across instructions on how to make your own voice skins and I thought that would be a nice surprise for my hubbie (not)! Looked way too complicated though - thought I'd leave it to the experts.

Also, I found a website offering safety camera info for a lot less money than the Tom Tom official site.

What I don't know is if downloading any of this unofficial software you risk jeopardizing the software on the Tom Tom and the system itself? If anyone can shed some light on this I would be very grateful as I don't want to damage it and have to buy my hubbie a new one!

Hubbie just come home from work :j and said that Tom won't switch on now - anyone know why before we look stoopid in the shop?
Irony.

Pocket GPS world are the guys that issue the saftey camera database, they are a set of POI's (points of interest) for tomtom you just copy them in to the map folder and they will be available for you to turn on and set warnings when you are within a certain distance. P GPS W used to give the database away for free but in February the started charging for it £2 a month I think wich isnt bad considering the price of a ticket and other camera warning systems.

as for your tt 700 not working have you checked that it is powered? I havnt played with a GO yet so Im not sure if they have batteries or not. just make sure that the unit is plugged in to the cradle/bracket and thatis powered. try holding the power button maybe?

One of the most usefull POI list I have is for Tesco stores great whe looking for R+R's.

The voices I dont know I have some but havnt been able to use them yet I will work them out soon
  • Try pressing the reset button underneath the tomtom go.I had the same problem with the 700 and I have had to do this twice since I bought it just after Christmas.Seems to do this when the battery runs right down.:)

Before you do anything with the TomTom 700 remember to back up the hard disk first. If it all goes wrong when you try things out, you can always restore to recover.
