Men are simple creatures and usually dont recognise a subtle hint unless it is attached to a brick.

    a brick???

I agree with your OH about the hassle factor, and does it really need to be a big do? You could plan whatever suited you both.

My 'engagement' conversation with OH went something like this:

me: I'm feeling I'd like us to get engaged next year. How do you feel?

Him: Good job, because I've been saving up for a ring!

    me: Have you !!

Could you maybe take the direct approach? I'm feeling I'd love for us to get married. How do you feel?

    Best of luck!

All your suggestions are brilliant and some have really made me smile!

It's good to read that I'm not alone and that lots of girls have gently or not so gently encouraged a proposal! My boyfriend runs a mile if I mention those dreaeded words." we need to 'talk" ! His idea of planning, is knowing he wants to paint the windows this Saturday :)

In response to surnames etc... I would plan to keep my surname, as it's very unusual and I don't want to let it go. It's already double barrelled, so I couldn't join it with his. I've always said this to him many times, so who knows what we'll do with children's names...but I guess that's a conversation to have later down the line. I've got to drag him down that aisle first :)

Hang on,hang on...your already hyphenated.....so he knows what we'll do with the childrens names.....

Does that mean they will have your hyphenated surname?

    That wouldnt fit with me..

Does he "know" or have you simply told him...?

No no no Psssst, she said WHO knows what we'll do with the names, not HE knows what we'll do with them! :D

    That's fab! I love it.

You're right, it doesn't have to be a big 'do' at all. I think we'd could go for whatever suits us.

My boyf would die if he knew I was on here discussing our hypothetical wedding :)
