Insurance claims for on-line meds

Following on from a discussion in Vet Record recently, I would like to let everyone know that it technically illegal for a vet to complete an insurance claim for you for any medications bought from an on-line pharmacy or chemist. Unless your vet is registered with the Financial Services Authority - about 3 or 4 are nationwide - this would be against RCVS and FSA rules, in the same way we can't claim for any referral work done (each practice would do their own claim). The on-line pharmacy would have to be involved in claiming for the medicines. As I don't fancy being struck off, we will be refusing to process claims for on-line meds (doesn't mean the insurance company wont pay for them) so you need to check with your insurance company about how they want you to proceed.

AFAIK in those circumstances, you can send the invoice to the insurer directly and they will reimburse you. I know NFU equine insurance does.
I suppose it means that you have to pay up front though.
TBH most people would only bother buying on line if it's for ongoing meds, rather than a "one off" prescription...0 -
Every insurance company will do it differently so I suggest everyone checks with them directly. Not every company will be as straightforward as the NFU. Some on-going meds can be quite expensive but there is nothing to stop you paying by credit card, putting in a claim straight away and hopefully getting your money before the bill is due.0
