4 minutes to get online !! what are my options?

Hi,
I have pretty much stopped using my computer as it takes over 4 minutes to get the home page up .

Can i just try to remove everything on it as there's nothing i desperately need to keep or do i need to upgrade or replace something ?

any suggestions appreciated though,as i use my laptop most of the time, the easiest and cheapest option may be my best bet

thanks in advance

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD NOW')
    http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
    UPDATE and FULL SCAN
Post the log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
    reboot
Click DO A SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE (Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

( Crazy Idea.... BUT ), Why not just Erase the whole drive and put Linux on ?? ( That would reduce the amount of spam' type stuff you'd Not download ??? ) K

PS- Try to download Linux BEFORE the wipe ? ;-)

It would help to know how you are connecting (USB modem, router, dial up wired/wireless, what OS you are using, which ISP, etc etc)? That wil enable people to give you meaningful answers.
Is it slow offline or is this just an online problem?

Press ctrl + alt + delete and tell us how many processes you have running?

    I'm assuming you're running Windows XP/Vista.

    I would suggest:
    - Going to the control panel and remove any programs you no longer need.
    - Deleting any files in your 'My Documents' you no longer need (and emptying the Recycle Bin afterwards).
    - Look at how many icons you have loading in the quick launch area (bottom right). You can usually configure most programs via their preferences/options screens so that they don't start at boot.
    - Run Scandisk (My computer, right click on your hard drive, go to properties)
    - Run Disk defragmenter (My computer, right click on your hard drive, go to properties)

If you could reply with more information about your computer and specifications/model no. (or roughly the age of the computer?) then people can give you more specific advice, eg: Buy more RAM, buy a new computer, etc.

my computer is about 6 years old and using windows xp.i have a netgear router and am on sky broadband. my laptop works fine via wireless through it.

i only really have problems first thing when i try to go straight to the home page. once that connects(after 4 minutes or so ) its not too bad time wise

my computer is attached to the router by a yellow cable (ethernet?)

How much ram, which software firewall, which virus scanner? Is the hard disk light constantly flashing?

the computer is an amd athlon xp 2200+
    1.79 ghz , 256mb of ram
space left on hard drive is 58 gb of the 76 gb available

it certainly needs upgrading but would it solve this particular problem and what would i need to get and what would the cost be approximately?

thanks again for all your comments
