Hijack This - how do you use it?

This one is aimed at Rik and all you other clever techies. I see lots of threads on here about Hijack This logs, and people post these when their PCs are infected etc. But how can you tell from the list of entries which items are harmful and need deleting?

I am only asking this out of curiosity, I have never needed to use Hijack This and am not about to try it out. I understand it is a powerful tool and should not be used unless you know what you are doing, but I just wondered how you use the information it gives you.

You post it here, and then analyse/interpret the things it highlights

A lot of entries jump out at you once you are familiar with it.

Weird looking executables and strange pathnames are the simplest to see.

You do need a bit of experience to understand how/where things are installed and what type of things you expect to be running when the machine boots.

not all entries are harmful but can be deleted. A whole host of applications configure themselves to run each time your machine boots up, Digital Camera software, Adobe stuff, auto updating entries etc for example, although not problematic, could be got rid of to reduce the amount of running progs.

This onlyt leaves the proper weird looking entries to search out and identify.

    Yeah. Like MYWEBSEARCH etc
Also look for things that shouldnt be together (2 resident scanners for example)
Ones that repeat (Logitech desktop messenger)
    And anything that looks unusual.......
