renewing a passport ?

I need to renew my passport and the expire date on it is feb 06. Do I still class it as renewal or do I apply for a complet new one, i.e send in birth certificate again.

Thanks xxx

    It's a renewal. I did a similar one a few weeks ago.

My passport expired a few years ago, glad to hear that it is just a case of re-newing it rather than a complete new one. Thanks to ohreally for the clarification and thanks to woozywendy for posing the question.

If you do it on-line they wil confirm the advice above by requesting the requirements regarding documents which will not include the birth certificate.

It's definitely a renewal and, though you do have to send new photos in, if you're recognisable from the old one you don't need to have them authorised by anyone.

My last passport (old black one!) expired in 1994 and hadn't been renewed since then so I wasn't sure whether I could renew it or have to submit a whole new application. A quick call to the passport office confirmed that I only needed to renew it but I got my form and photo authorised to confirm my likeness as I look a bit different now. I had no problems getting a new passport.
