make a playlist when you plug in the i pod it gives the option where to autofill from.
    Creating a playlist
    1. Do one of the following:
      • To create an empty playlist, deselect all songs (click the iTunes window) and choose File > New Playlist, or click the Add button (+) in the bottom-left corner of the iTunes window.
      • To create a playlist containing selected songs, Command-click to select the songs and choose File > New Playlist from Selection.
    2. Type a name for the playlist.
    3. Click Music (or another item below Library) and then drag an item to the playlist. To select multiple items, hold down the Control or Shift key while you click.
To remove an item from a playlist, select it and press the Delete key (this does not remove the item from your library or hard disk).

You can also create Smart Playlists that update automatically based on rules you choose, and a Genius playlist created from music in your library that's similar to the selected song.
thats how it works with my shuffle

Select your iPod in iTunes, go to the Summary tab, and then check "Sync only checked songs and videos".

Then uncheck the boxes beside the songs you don't want to sync.

Or, you can select "Manually manage music and videos" and then it won't automatically sync anything. You then add tracks to your iPod by dragging them from your library onto your iPod yourself. This is how I use my iPod.

Thats how I do it. Its safer. :)

If you use the auto sync you need a lot of spare space on your PC. Mine only has 80gb but my ipod has 60gb (and is almost full) so I cannot afford to waste 75% of my HDD on the ipod library.

When I first got my ipod (6 years ago) I spent ages (coz of USB 1) putting a load of music on it. I then went back to work overseas really chuffed with my new purchase. I then installed itunes on my works PC so that I could work on it; cleaning up song/album names etc. As soon as I plugged it in the auto sync kicked in and deleted everything off the ipod!!!
As you can imagine I was not a happy bunny :(

This is what I hate about itunes. It really should ask before removing stuff from your ipod. I have mine set to manually manage my music. I prefer to sort it all out myself.

I used to have a Zen stone and this was much more user friendly. I used to just drag and drop music from or to my ipod and it also converts my cds to mp3.

    It says:

"The iPod is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPod and sync with this iTunes library?

An iPod can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPod with the contents of this iTunes library."
