Just a thought but I'm sure if you write to Hilton head office a nicely worded complaint, that they'll at least throw something in for you instead of refunding.
They're pretty good overall imho on customer service and it might make it easier to bear!
That usually works a treat for me anyway.. (in general, not tried it with the Hilton but worth a shot).

try and speak to the manager of the hotel and explain the situation. he will probably tell you that the gaurantee is administered from elsewhere. ask him for a name. . speak to this person . when they decline to help you ask them for their name and then ask for their bosses name . keep moving up the management chain until someone helps you. you may need to be firm to get the bosses details but try to be as polite as possible. good luck.0
