Do they have to be *.DOC files?
What version of Open Office are you using?

I'm using Office 3.0, I asked about alternatives, but my tutor wants .doc files.
If you select File> Export >Save as type - you will find about 21 different formats for exporting the Open Office Draw file (both vector and raster graphics formats, including JPEG).
