Download Speed Problem

Hi Everyone,
I have 2 computers on my home network and I've been having a lot of problems with the internet connection lately. Currently the PC that is wired up to the router is running super slow - it won't download anything. I have done a speed test on it and the download speed is coming out at 0.06Mb/s!! After doing the same speed test on the wireless computer it is coming up with a speed of 1.91Mb/s - quite a discrepancy. I've done these tests several times over the last few days and the top speed I've been able to get on the wired PC is 0.13Mb/s. The speed on the wireless one has been reasonably constant - the lowest was 1.68Mb/s.
I could understand if the wired PC was a bit slower as it is a much older PC and is slower overall but this much of a difference is baffling. Does anyone have any idea what could be going wrong? Thanks for any help.
Regards
Michelle

Check for running p2p software.
Failing that run the usual anti-spy /malware programs..Laters

Hi Solitaire,
Thanks for the reply. I've ran an ad-aware scan already but I'll run some more. How will I know if I have p2p software running? Thanks.

check to see that icons are down next to the time (for legit p2p) Otherwise someone here will post the info about scanning for malware and other stuffLaters

you will usually see an icon next to the clock, there are lots of p2p applications available, the first few that spring to mind are limewire, vuze or utorrent.
though the sound of things it might be a hardware problem between the pc and the router, trapped/kinked network cable or dodgy network card.
if you click start -> run
type CMD and press enter
type ipconfig and press enter
find out what the default gateway IP is
it usually looks like 192.168.1.1 but could be different.
type ping 192.168.whatever the IP address is.
you "should" (if everything is working ok)
get something similar to thisPinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
however if the time is higher than 1ms there may be somethin wrong with your pc.0 -
have you tried plugging the cable into a different port on the router?
have you tested another ethernet cable to see if that has an effect?0 -
I used to have limewire but uninstalled it a long time ago and I downloaded utorrent a few months ago but as my computer has been so slow to download anything I've not used it at all. I have bbc iplayer and 4od but I disable them when the computer starts up and only open them when I want to use them. The only things next to the clock are java platform, avira, comodo firewall, comodo safesurf, safely remove hardware, volume button and xerox printing scout. I don't think any of them could be causing it. I've pasted the ipconfig ping below but I think it looks ok

I have tried plugging the wire into a different port but I haven't tried another ethernet cable as I don't have one at hand. Thanks.:hello: :hello: :hello:0
