On 12th September 2008 he received the first letter from Thames Credit stating he owed £733.93.

That same day he paid the full amount they asked for, reduced to £549.75 because he paid quickly (without any proof of what the debt was for) and they said that this was not going to affect his credit rating. The original lender was GE Capital.

He then received two further letters from Thames Credit, one confirming, on the 16th September 2008, the payment amount and the other confirming the account had been cleared and nothing further owed on the 3rd October 2008.

We thought that was everything sorted. When we did a credit report on the 2nd June 2009 there was no record of the account or any default.

After we got married we tried to open a joint bank account in July 2009 and the application was declined due to my partner’s poor credit rating. This was a surprise as he has always paid his bills on time and on the 2nd June 2009 had a very good credit rating.

When he got another copy of his credit report on the 27th July 2009 it now showed the account with Aktiv Kapital and the default (the account had never shown previously).

On the 27th August 2009 we sent Aktiv Kapital a letter asking for proof of the default and we received a letter back saying that they didn’t have to supply the information due to the fact that there was no debt owing.

The information held on Equifax says
    Status - Settled
    Credit Limit - £0
    Date Updated - 02/10/08
    Start date - 04/02/04
    Date last delinquent - 07/07
    Date Satisfied - 12/07/07
Default Date - (this is blank)
    Default/Delinquent Balance - £733

    Payment History
Year 2007 May - default, June – Satisfied

The settlement date is wrong as my partner didn’t know about the debt until 12th September 2008 which is when he paid it.

Experian has a default date of 12/07/07.

Thank you so much for your help. I will try my best to get online at 7pm. J

    Hiya

So to date your hubby knows nothing about this debt? yet he paid them? I dont mean to sound funny but is he usually this daft? I mean, if someone, anyone ever ever asks for money you always check you owe it first, its the common sense thing to do!

Sorry, rant over. To be honest you need to quiz him and quiz some more cos this debt must be his - if not why did he pay? I mean, we have to assume in that first letter that it was addressed to him right? If so then he must have taken credit, if not then why did he pay? I cannot understand that.....

Can you have a word and double check, it may not be a laptop, forget what the item may have been and try and get the facts - did he buy something on credit dated 04 February 2004? It was 5 years ago but he needs to remember!

Regardless of the above, can you confirm then; it started with GE Money they sold to Thames Credit who your hubby paid in full but Aktiv Kapital have added a default? Can you confirm this please....

he only bought the laptop around that time and he thought that was what they were chasing for. just a bit of background:- he was with his ex at the time and thought that when they split up and closed the join account it was over looked when everything was moved. it was only me questioning amounts and dates that we have since thought it is unlikely to be the laptop. (he said he bought the laptop for £900 and paid for it over 2 years interests free at £37 per month, so if that was the case he would have cleared it well before the default date). the problem we had at the time he received the letter was he has been made redundant 2 month before and they threatened to increase the amount if not settled straight away and there was no way we could have afforded that. in hindsight we would have done things very differently but we can't change it now.

Do you think for one moment that his ex could have purchased it in his name? I mean i'm clutching at straws here but hey......

Actually, you mention it was GE Money - therefore it is probably a storecard such as Debenhams/Top Man/Burtons etc etc - GE Money usually issue store/credit cards.....

Sorry but can you ask about that, did he ever open a buy now for 10% off discount in a major high street store around the time?

Also, on Equifax - can you confirm the type of account it has registered? i.e. credit card/catalogue/bank account/HP etc etc (should say store/credit card)

he says he has never had a storecard
the reference says:- GE Capital (Ex Creation Finance Ltd)

we have been over this a number of times (as you can imagine) and nothing has come to mind about what else it could possibly be.

he has no reason to think he ex took anything out in his name (would it have been possible for her to do that?)

    Hiya,

Ok, Creation finance used to issue several high street storecards under the Arcadia brand. This was then sold to GE Money (that explains that GE Capital ex Creation Finance as the lender). Therefore i'm quite certain that he would have taken out a storecard.

It could be a range of shops, typically: Burton, Topshop/man, Outfit, Warehouse, Dorothy Perkins, Debenhams etc etc

Now then, it has been known for DCA's to cut/paste signatures etc but before I dwell i'm just checking - he's never had a storecard then, no? He's 100% certain?

If not, did he take one out with his ex in store, for whatever reason or did he buy online - maybe from Debenhams or something...? It has to be linked to the Arcadia group you'd have to assume.... This is allthat links Creation and GE Money from memory...
