I bought a BMW 318ci coupe from Cooper Cobham 18 months ago. I've had no end of problems with the engine system and after just paying out £1.5k on engine repairs I've been told on good authority that this particular 'variable control engine' is a rogue engine and BMW stopped making it last year because of the problems they're having with it. However, much to my horror they are keeping this information 'in-house' and when people take their 3 series for servicing at a dealership they are replacing sensors and wires and NOT telling the customer.

My mechanic (who is BMW trained) told me that once the variable control starts going wrong it sends everything else into disarray and the EML system throws up messages to pretty much replace all senors, wiring and valve control units.

What rights do I have? Does anyone have any experience of this or know of anyone who's had the same problems?

I have written to BMW to complain and am awaiting a reply. I've been told that even after spending the money I've already spent on repairs it will play up again.

More details needed. Was it purchased new? On what authority do you have it that the engines have a design fault?
