Another point to note is filters can sometimes go which will show these signs. Make sure all your phone connections have properly working filters.

    Uninstall ~
    ASK toolbar
    EPSON toolbar
    WINDOWS LIVE tooolbar

TICK these in HIJACk then FIX them ~

When you rerun hijack above (AFTER removing the ASK toolbar), if these still exist then FIX these too ~
    O2 - BHO: AskBar BHO - {201f27d4-3704-41d6-89c1-aa35e39143ed} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll
    O23 - Service: ASKService - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\AskService.exe

If you still have problems id be leaning towards ZONEALARM being the problem

I had a similar thing with my Ethernet connection on my desktop.
I discovered it was the ip number which would change .I think it was zone alarm doing something and noticed on virgin medias site there was a comment about zone alarm conflicts.
Anyway having added the new updates for windows XP, I downloaded the newer zone alarm and everything is now fine.
Could be worth checking if your firewall is messing things up.

Okay, I have turned off Zone Alarm and turned on the installed Windows Firewall and everything seems to be okay now. Is the Windows Firewall sufficient? Or is it wise to have an alternative firewall?

Vistas firewalls fine for general computing (Especially if you use a router)
    Make sure you uninstall zonealarm

Thanks, I've done that now, it's such a treat not to have to keep rebooting. Thanks everyone for your help.
