Welcome to the MSE forums shelldanielle.
Provided you're talking about the master socket not working, that should mean that the fault is external - and BT will fix it free of charge (you didn't 'try fixing it' of course).
Take care to disconnect everything else and then plug a known working corded telephone into the test socket inside the master socket before you report the fault though (if the problem is caused by your equipment, you will be liable to pay - and the charges are not cheap).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
And if the fault is internal, just get a local electrician/telecoms engineer to fix it for you. You are under no obligation to use BT and if you do it will cost you a minimum of £120 for the call out. A local guy will fix it for a third of that.
PS: have you tried posting the problem on the techie board to see if someone can help you with it?No free lunch, and no free laptop

Hi shelldanielle,
I take it your landline service provider is BT? You can check the line for faults at http://www.bt.com/fault, but as others have said there are a few things you can try yourself, some troubleshooting tips are available on those Help and Support pages:
http://bt.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bt.cfg/php/enduser/cci/bt_adp.php?p_faqid=9818&p_sid=4UhF_gxj&p_lva=&cat_lvl1=345&cat_lvl2=353&cat_lvl3=374&p_cv=3.374&p_cats=345%2C353%2C374
Let me know how you got on.
All the best,
David
