Amsterdam - cheap bars/restaurants?

I'm going to Amsterdam next weekend and i'm wondering if anyone can recommend some cheap/fairly priced bars and restaurants in the central area. I will be staying near the main train station.

Also - if you could recommend any other cheap touristy things to do in amsterdam it will be much appreciated.

Thanks :-)

I always eat at La Place when I'm in Amsterdam.

Maoz is popular for filling up whilst on the move.
  • love La Place - its in the department store V&D, the pizzas and fresh juice are great, I also like a cafe called Divertimenti, near the flower market, and there are loads of cheap cafes selling all sorts of food, from toasted sarnies to fellafel around the Albert Cuyp Market area - there is also a good market to browse!

On weekdays the university cafeteria serves great food at bargain prices, but I am not sure if its open at the weekend! Quite a few places are closed on Sundays, but I believe La place is open!

Fries and crokketten from Febo otherwise!

There are no cheap places to eat in Amsterdam but the service and the food is excellent. Dont fall into the trap of having an English breakfast, the only place you can get a traditional English breakfast is England. Even the Irish ones leave a lot to be desired and at around 10-11 euros, need i say more.

Amsterdam is one of my favourite places.

If you get the chance, get the number 9 tram from the station and get off at Rembrandt Square, just a few stops down from the station and eat at L'Opera in the conservatory looking onto the square. OOOOh I'm beginning to feel envy coming on.

    Enjoy ...........

One last suggestion, go to the sex museum on the main drag from the Station to dam square, it is hilarious and only about 4 euros.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I'm throwing in my two penneth for Bazar on the road of the Albert Cuyp market http://www.bazaramsterdam.com/read/ams_en/1441
OK, so not cheap but a lovely atmosphere, excellent service and fabulous food.

We also went to a lovely place called Capitain Zeppos for lunch - I think a previous poster is right in saying you don't get cheap food in Amsterdam unless you're prepared to brave a FEBO!

I know you're staying near the station but pretty much the whole city is walkable, and lovely walks along the canals.

Look up things like passes if you're staying a few days, e.g the iamsterdam card http://www.iamsterdam.com/en/visiting/iamsterdamcard

oh, Bazar is lekker I agree! If you are staying nar the station then you are near to the tourist information too, which is useful. You will want to buy a travel pass or strippenkart for the trams and metro too, or hire bikes from MacBike!

I love the freshly made pizzes from la Place, they are excellent! and the apple cake too - mmmm!

You can also eat cheaply if you buy french fries - Bram Ladage is good - but I am not certain there is one in Amsterdam, but I am sure there are similar chains, go for the 'speciaal' with mayonnaise, peanut sauce etc on top!

Don't agree with the no cheap food in Amsterdam thing. The most expensive meal deal at Maoz is less than 6 Euros.
Freshly cooked main courses at La Place start from around 6 Euros and there are cheaper options for salads etc.

Of course there are the ubiquitous frites and mayo for a walking snack and lots of kebab restaurants selling Shawarma(not the same as the nasty Doner Kebab we have in this country).
