I'd be looking at a Sony Vaio or maybe a Dell XPS 13.

Unless you're sure the recipient really wants one, I wouldn't go down the Mac route.

Setting a budget is fine, but because you have £800 to spend, you don't have to spend that much.
First thing to decide at that price level with a laptop is whether you want a 15 inch or 17 inch laptop. Does it have to be portable, if so a 17 inch can be carried, but you wouldn't want to do that on a daily basis. However for regular web design work, a 15 inch will probably be too small. So maybe consider a hi-spec 15 inch with a separate 22 in monitor?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    I have a Samsung R710 - 17-inch Laptop, Centrino 2 P7450, 2.13GHz, 3GB RAM, 250GB HDD, Blu-ray, Vista Home Premium.

Very pleased with and runs a lot faster than the Acer 7720G it replaced.

Available for under £800 from several places.

I totally agree. Even better if you can get an education discount.

They come with web design, photo, music, movie, and DVD authoring software, and are very portable.

In Consumer Reports' latest study, Apple's laptops came top in the 13 inch, 14 to 15 inch, and 17 to 18 inch categories for performance, design, versatility, screen quality, battery life, and customer service.
