Cashing/claiming limited company shares re: a buyout?!

Hello, I was wondering if anyone had any advice on a rather interesting situation:
I am an employee of a small private company, and having been taken on in the initial stages of the company some years back, was given documents that gave me share options/entitled me to shares. I was told they would only ever be worth anything should the company ever float or be bought out (which looked highly unlikely for years). It looks like we are now going to be bought out and my problem is this: As the only remaining original employee (the directors/owners are the same) to whom this offer was made, how do I go about staking my claim?
many thanks

Did you ever get issued with proper share certificates? Or even paperwork relating to 'share options'?The Pegster

there was a document telling me I had shares of some description, but would only mean anything in a buy out or float. I'm not sure where the paperwork is - will this be essential or will the company have to have recorded it themselves?0
