never received a gas bill. What should I do?

I have finally found out from consumer advice that EDF has been my Gas supplier since Dec 2006, yet I haven't had a gas bill from them for some time. They also supply my electricity, so I can't understand the oversight as they have my records. I'm about to move out and rent my property. What should I do? If I decide to switch now, can EDF still bill me? How will they find out? Any advice appreciated:confused:

Do you have evidence of the steps you took to set up a gas account?

Im sure I do somewhere... I have lived there since Sep 2004 and used British Gas since I bought the place and moved in. For some reason EDF has been suppling me now since Dec 2006, but I wasn't even living there then as I was in Asia on a sabattical and couldn't have switched suppliers then as I wasn't in the country.
I tried last year to rectify this by calling both BG and EDF to ask if they supplied my gas and both declined. I only got a letter from the consumer watchdog yesterday who stated that EDF has been my supplier since Dec 2006. Im confused. What should I do, call EDF and own up for their discretion?

you have done your bit and asked them and they denied supplying your property. record the date and time of your phone call.. you have not recieved a bill for the duration since 2006. neither have you recieved a letter regarding outstanding dues.
i would wait till they send a bill. however just check your credit file to make sure there is no outstanding payment to them , just in case.
also save a set amount a month for a bill in the future.

I am a little confused here.

Why did you contact EDF last year, if you only found out yesterday that EDF were supplying you?

What made you think that EDF could be supplying you instead of BG?

Presumably you wrote to the Consumer Watchdog on this issue?

Thanks for your help cocktail. How do I go about checking my crdit file? Does one have to pay for a report?
Cardew - I realised last spring when the prices shot up and I was looking to switch supplier that I hadn't recived a gas bill for some time. I have used both BG and EDF for GAs and Electricity since I moved in; hence I asked them both who supplies my gas. I have now decided to move out, so I need resolution to this as I don't want the tenants to be lumped with a nasty bill. So I called them both again and finally asked the consumer watch dog for help.

When did you last receive a bill for gas, and who was it from?

I think it was end of 2006 and British Gas. My neighbours in the basement flat moved in around this time, and I have a feeling the meter numbers or somethign like that have got mixed up perhaps

Under the billing code, EDF can only backdate charges for 12 months if they are at fault. i.e. haven't raised a bill.

If they raised a bill but you didn't get it because you were in Asia then they are not at fault.

For EDF to have taken over your gas from BG(without your knowledge), BG and EDF must have agreed meter readings at the takeover date. BG normally contact the account holder and try to persuade them to remain with BG.

You would have also got a final bill from BG.

IF EDF raised a bil and I never receved it, surely they would have followed up and continued to charge me, send me bilsl for the period until now?
I feel I need to be honest about it. But I think I'll put a regular amount aside in case they decide to charge me an impossible amount for the last 12 months

    hi anglofinn,
just go to cards /loans at the top of this page(MSE) and go to credit ratings(under problem debts), sorry dont know how to attach the link. i think its a £2 fee for a paper report, but you are in no hurry. There are free ways of getting it but not worth the hassle IMHO.
my mate had a similiar issue with electricity in a flat. no bills since he moved in 4 years ago. similar issue on contacting the providers who actually do not have his flat no. on their system. so no bills for 4 years and free:beer::beer::beer:. however do remember to keep aside some money in a saving account just in case they do come back with a bill. and remember theyy can only back date for some months,12months/2 years ----not sure.
