Blueyonder P.C. Guard

Hi, i am with blueyonder and as part of the bundle that we have we get p.c. guard this is fire wall anti virus anti spyware and pop up blocker all under the same umberella of p.c. guard. We have now been told that in the near future we will be getting charged for this service.
I am looking for something that is free to replace this, as i think we pay enough as it is, what i would like is one operator to do all the above..........any ideas would be great.

You should only get charged for it if you are on the Basic level of service (1Mb) If you are on Complete (2Mb) or Elite (4Mb) you should continue to get it free.

In that case it's worth reading the sticky thread at the top of the forum entitled "What Security do you use?" as this contains many people's thoughts on all of the security software out there, a lot of which is free :)

    Hi Paul2468,

I am assuming that you are still looking for some replacement software and that you cannot negitiate with Blueyonder to continue using this existing software for free.

The first thing to ask is what operating system you are using. I would guess that you are using a version of Windows, so I will base my reccomendations upon this.

Sadly I can't recommend one application which do it all for you, for free. But I can recommend several seperate programs that will work together to keep you safe online.

    Antivirus: AVG Antivurus
AVG is a reasonably well established anti-virus solution and I have used it on several machines without any complaint. This is the free version, but the company do develop a paid alternative which offers only a few benefits. It will protect you from all the major threats and is regularly updated.

Firewall: **If you have Windows XP, I would definately recommend getting Service Pack 2 (which is available from the Windows Update Site - In Internet Explorer - Click "Tools" and select "Windows Update") as this offers a Windows built in Firewall which is very effective. Do note though
that SP2 is only available to users with Valid copies of Windows XP.

If you aren't running XP or want an alternative to the SP2 solution for whatever reason - I would recommend ZoneAlarm This is another mature product with a free version which offers good updates off the back of thier paid product. The software is reasonably straightforward to use and provides good protection.

Pop-Up Blocker: **If you have Windows XP, I would definately recommend getting Service Pack 2 (which is available from the Windows Update Site - In Internet Explorer - Click "Tools" and select "Windows Update") as this offers a built in Pop-up Blocker for Internet Explorer. Do note though
that SP2 is only available to users with Valid copies of Windows XP.

Again - if an alternative is required you might look at something like the Google Toolbar as this offers not only an effective Pop-Up blocker but a host of other useful features.

Anti-Spyware: LavaSoft Adaware is yet another top quality product - made free on the back of a paid product. Again it is regularly updated and easy to use. What more could you ask for.

Microsoft are also developing an Anti-Spyware solution, however it's still in development although versions of it are available for use. The latest is called Microsoft Defender, but personally I would choose the more mature Adaware application until Microsoft release thier final version.

Hope this info is of use, and if you have any questions - just drop a reply into this thread, or send me a PM.

    Cheers,

    Rinko
