Grey stains on clothes after washing

Hi,

Our washing machine has started leaving grey marks on any black or dark coloured clothes. It is driving me mad and it doesn't seem to be going away. Whites and light colours are fine.

So,

Is it the washing powder? washing machine? am I putting too many items in? anything else?

I have looked at the manufacturers website but it is no help. The washing machine is a Hotpoint and is 4 years old.

Your machine probably needs a clean out. Look inside the rubber and see if it is full of gunge. Modern low temp washing does not clean the machine. There a few threads around about this subject.
