Cost of new fence

Hi,
I've been given a quote to supply and erect a 5 foot lap fence with double 6" gravel boards, to the length of 7.2m, plus to remove a tree stump about 1foot in width.

The quote came in at £480 which i feel is rather expensive.

Can anyone suggest if this is over priced please? I live in Northampton.

Last year I had 17m of 5ft closeboard with concrete posts and 1ft concrete gravel board, a very sturdy tongue and groove back gate and a picket front gate for £1000, all very good quality.

The company I used manufacture and fit their fence and are popular in my area, I am in Greater Manchester.

I think it depends on where you are with a lot of these things, but I had the same fencing when I lived in London a few years ago again from a company who manufacture their own and they were also reasonable and well made. So, I would suggest companies who manufacture and fit are the best to go for, also get a few quotes to compare.

If you post the same question in the moneysaving around the home section you may get more suggestions, hopefully from people in your area.

It sounds reasonable if they are using a quality fence. Expect around £250-£300 for that specific fence you are after. And the £180 for the tree stump.

Could'nt you remove the stump yourself?

Alternatively and obviously, you can buy it yourself much cheaply and pay someone else to just install it.

Just remember. Some fences are just plain and nasty. The cheap £12 fences are just cheap and start to fold / crease over time due to the rain. The expensive fences are much thicker and just last a bit longer.

I agree with the £12 fences!!

Even using cheapest materials you'd be looking at:

6 panels @ £12
12 gravel boards @ £3
7 posts @ £7

£157 for materials. Leaving £323 for 2 men to take 1 day to install is £160 each. That's not a lot really.

£480 isn't too expensive..although I'd probably do it myself.

We've been getting quotes in for a fence recently...although due to the winds we get up here, we're having 6 ft hit & miss type one fitted...and a much longer stretch, but our quotes varied from £810 - £1750!
We shopped around and have bought the fence and gravel boards/posts from a local merchant - delivered free to our home, and are paying a fellow to come and fit them all next week....for just £695!

It certainly pays to shop around.
