I,m a carpenter and Joiner and I would suggest replacing the fascias etc with Cedar (cedrella) , you can use either Western Red Cedar or Brazilian Cedar. The good thing with Cedar is it is very hardwearing (Cedar roof tiles called "shingles" last for years and are untreated) you can leave them to "weather" naturally and go a silvery grey,or you can stain, seal them.

Cedar will outlast upvc and look great for years...:D oh and its naturally resistant to fungus and rotting.....smells good too....

You can buy Cedar from most timber suppliers and importers such as Y Goldberg & Sons ltd, Timbmet and Brooks Bros

Lastly Don't use softwood be it "whitewood" or "redwood", they are fast growing, kiln dried and have no natural oils to protect against rot..

Thanks for that suggestion. I assume that I couldn't fix cedar on top of the existing timber?

Hi Andy, its best to take off the existing timbers as they could rot behind the Cedar..

Okay, thanks for that. It would be a huge job to do that so I may just end up painting with good quality paint, if I can find something suitable. I used Butinox in the past and it seems to last a reasonable amount of time.

Dulux Weathershield is good and also Sadolin superdec too.

    Good Luck ...
  • Google 'Ask Jeff', it will bring up a link to the site run by The Sunday Telegraph's construction expert. Very informative article on UPVC products, suffice to say I'd stick with the wood!

We decided to stick with wood in the end. In fact the new extension soffit and fascia has just been done and I painted them with Butinox before the joiner fitted them.
