Can seafood (including prawns) be given to a one and a half year old safely?

While a full term baby is born with a more or less fully developed brain the infants brain does continue to develop structurally until the child is about six years old. Omega 3's EPA and DHA comprise a major part of the structural material needed for the brain to operate properly. The main source of Omega3's is MARINE OILS.

It is true that some omega can be metabolised from vegetarian sources, linseed is a good example, however this process is not as efficient and a lower percentage of DHA results from vegetarian sources compared with oily fish. Fish shouldn't be considered a luxury for children it should be an ESSENTIAL part of the weekly menu.

The official recommendations from the Food Standards Agency

One point that isn't mentioned very often (recent research) is that it's been discovered that more DHA is absorbed by astrocyte brain cells in the presence of vitamin d3 cholecalciferol. Man evolved naked in an area of the world where fish was a major part of the diet. Vitamin D3 is made by the skin on direct exposure to sunlight. Ensuring your baby gets daily exposure to sunlight will not only reduce the risk of developing MS, CANCER, DIABETES, OBESITY, MENTAL ILLNES and depression amongs other conditions later in life it will also increase the amount of omega 3 available and inprove intelligence.
