Does being refused a credit card hurt your chances of getting one at a later date

I want to apply for a credit card from Nationwide as they are one of the best for foreign transactions. However I am a student with no income so I expect I am likely to be declined. Should I just apply and see what happens or could this cause me problems in the future, with other credit card applications?

Applications show up on your credit file, and each application you make makes you look more and more desperate for credit, making you less attractive to lenders and more likely to be declined. So yes, being declined does hurt your chances. Just one application won't do much harm though. You will be better off applying for a student credit card. A few banks do them. I know Barclaycard and NatWest do. If it is a card specifically for foreign transactions you need why not just get the right kind of bank account and debit card to go with it? Martin has a guide to this in the travel section I think.
