How do I close my joint account!!

Hi, I have a joint account with my ex we have been apart for nearly 3 years now and ever since I have been desperately trying to resolve this issue.

Basically, I have no contact with my ex, it ended very badly, with him going to prison for year and half. I have no desire to speak to him, i don't even know where he is now living and it is very important he does not know my address etc.

The account is with HSBC and they will not close it unless both of us sign. I have told them the situation with no resolution, I know he has not been paying his loan and credit card whilst in prison so is he dragging me down with him?

Please advise me on how to get this account closed i will do anything, as i would love him out of my life for good.

Thanks very much

Tell them the account is in dispute and to freeze it - if they won't do it go through the formal complaints process

They have frozen it thank god.
Im worried that if it isn't closed properly he is going to be a financially attached to me forever?
I can't believe they are being so difficult there is no money in it why can't they just take my name off?
I wish id never opened it in the first place!!
    Thanks

Have a look at HSBC's Terms and Conditions, which are here. Page 22, condition 5.1 is the relevant one:
5.1. Unless this conflicts with another authority given in writing on the joint account, and until any one of you cancels this authority, you authorise us to:
    • [...]
    • accept instructions signed or given to us by any one of you to act on behalf of you all, in all other transactions with us, including providing a loan, overdraft or other facility, opening further accounts in your joint names and closing accounts in your joint names. For such purposes, instructions may be in writing or any other form we accept and may be given by any means or through any media we accept and on such terms as we may tell you.

Have emphasised the parts appropriate to you in bold above.

  • You could also complete disassociation forms with the credit ref agencys so you are not connected to him any longer.
