Fast growing prickly climber

Hi everyone

I'm looking for a plant to grow up my fence to deter people from climbing over the fence.

So it needs to be a fast grower with plenty of prickly bits, I was told pyracantha but after visiting the garden centre I found it isn't that prickly!

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Rogosa Rose, berberris - initial thoughts.

Edited to add the Fire thorn, which is a type of Pyracantha does have wicked thorns.

if you found a pyracantha or Fire Thorn to be 'not that prickly' i suspect you may have ben looking at a mis labled Cotoneaster.

    Just my opinion

It was a Orange Glow pyracantha I looked at, I ran my hand all over it and didn't get pricked once, could this have been because it was in a garden centre?

With all the different versions of the pyracantha available which would be best for me?

  • I was advised on a plant called rosewall - just googled it and cannot find anything about it though - maybe its another name for something?

The plant you looked at in the garden centre may have been mislabelled because I have Orange Glow and the thorns are vicious.

I've got the same problem. Pyracantha is the plant I would recommend too, evil thorns.

I've topped my fence with expanding trellis, the one with pointy bits. It's spiky and also looks flimsy which is a deterrent to anyone trying to climb over it. I've reinforced it with a batten fixed across the middle and painted it in with the fence. Instant, cheap and effective, might be a good aternative until your plants grow.

Rosa rugosa, I would think. I seem to remember seeing this being advertised in a Victorian-style ad, maybe from Vernons?

Pyracantha is the plant I would recommend - Make sure it is "firethorn".

If you don't get stuck by that you are made of something other than skin :)

It will need a bit of training to make it grow how you want i suspect.

My god, Pyracantha, had it in the front garden, really really sharp long spikes, if the one you looked at didn't, buy it from somewhere else.
Do realise though that you need very heavy duty gloves to prune it, it really is vicious.

Almost broke my back getting it out as well, so put it where you want it to stay.
