Organic veg

Options
Hi,

I am not sure if this belongs in this section, but I just wanted to let you know there is some excellent, low-priced organic veg available at https://www.riverford.co.uk, they also supply organic eggs, milk, vege products etc. I've just arranged for a regular fortnightly delivery, delivery is free. Although they deliver mainly in the SW - there is a network they are setting up of other farmers across the UK.

Sadly money saving and organic food are often hard to combine, so hopefully this may help those people who - like me - don't want to eat lots of pesticides and hormones!

thanks for the link, will have a look.
  • I love the idea of an organic box (genuinely fresh local produce and no air miles!) but very sadly I find that tescos offers organic products at approximately 50% less than the box schemes :(

I'm a happy Riverford customer - I like the way the veg is very fresh and so lasts longer than supermarket veg. Also, you can look at next week's box online and cancel or change it if you would prefer a different box.

    Thank you!

I have registered but they still do not deliver in London.

At the moment I get two small boxes, one of veg and one of fruit. Abel and Cole do a scheme for schools so that they can buy produce at low cost and then add a small mark up.

I get these two boxes from my local Steiner school. They are never quite enough for my family of 4, but I supplement with Farmers' market trips and extra orders from Abel and Cole, who deliver my organic butter, milk and cheese weekly.

So, buying from them I catch two birds with a stone, support organic farming AND my local community! Ain't I the goody goody ;)!

I have found Abel and Cole really good and their minimum order for free delivery is £6. Still, I am always on the lookout for a bargain!

Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

don't deliver near me either, no one ever does. :-[
  • I'm in Hertfordshire and, surprisingly, Riverford do deliver in my area, but although cheaper than most, they are still more expensive than the delivery scheme run by my local healthfood shop, so I shall stick with that for now. Thanks for the posting though. I shall bookmark it for when we move.

  • A stall at my local farmer's market (Kenilworth, Warks) runs an organic fruit and veggie box scheme which I took for a while. It was great, because they'd put some really unusual things in there, and it made me quite inventive for a while with my cooking - Thursdays were really exciting, getting home and not knowing what would be in the bag! ;D

It actually worked out LESS expensive than my usual Sainsbury's trolley dash, because I knew it was costing me a bit (about 6GBP per week) so I made sure I ate everything they sent me! Normally you see I'm quite bad and end up chucking away half of what I buy ;)

And, I'm convinced that the veggies tasted nicer too - it's hard to describe but everything was 'more' than usual - the carrots were more carrotty, the leeks were more leeky, the potatoes tasted of something :)

I have a mixed box of organic fruit and veg delivered to me every fortnight by fairorganics.co.uk and I have to agree with the above comments, everything does taste fresher and better somehow!

I stick to whatever they send as not only is it fun (the surprise element) but it also means I try new recipes - so educational as well ;D
