PCworld laptop stopped working after 8 days

Hi guys
We bought a new laptop 8 days ago from PC world. Already it has stopped working - we press the on button, a light on the button comes on but nothing else happens. We've tried the advice from their techguys on line but that didn't work (hold on button down without battery/lead then try again).
Does anyone know if we would get a brand new replacement laptop if we returned it to the shop - I don't really want to end up with a refurbed one as a replacement or even having to wait weeks for it repairing. I looked on the website and it seems if we ordered from PCworld online we'd get either refund or replacement if we return in 28 days but not sure if this applies as we bought it in shop.
Can anyone help - I'd like to know what I can ask for before taking it back.
Thanks & regards
Charlotte

As the machine is not fit for purpose the sale of goods act says you can demand a replacement. They might try and fob you off with a repair but you don't have to accept.0

As you are worried about getting a refurb or repaired one, I'd take it back, ask for your money back then buy a new one

This happened to me.
Bought the laptop from PC World and the keyboard would not resond after a week.
They said they would re-install the OS, fair enough. The reinstall didn't solve the problem and they gave me a new one. All very painless.0 -

Um no, They can give you a repair, Which is covered by the Sales of Good Act. :money:0 -
Um no, if the OP rejects the goods under SOGA, then she is entitled to a straight refund.0

But that doesnt mean the retailer will do what you want them to do!
2 weeks after buying a laptop, it stops working. I went back (fully aware of the SOGA) and the refused to refund, as I wanted to go elsewhere due to their rubbish customer service.
They insisted on repairing the laptop, 1 week later and several telephone calls and letters to the retailer, I had no choice but to back down and let them repair.
Laptop is fine now, works perfect. But it wasnt the resolution I wanted.
I even had Trading Standards on the phone to the manager of the store, who reminded him of the statutory rights and the SOGA not to mention various other different rights & acts, and he still insisted he wanted to send it for repair first.0 -
Well sure if you let yourself be bullied into acceptance... Me, on the last refusal, I would have written to HO with copy to manager giving them 14 days to comply or prepare for court, and more to the point, after the 14 days, if they still didn't budge, I would have issued court proceedings and claimed additional court fees etc. I have had to stand firm a few times so far, and so far, they have never chanced it to try and go to court to deny me my statutory rights. Funny that.

I agree, never let a shop bully you. You knew your rights and you should have stuck by them. It's worked out ok as your laptop is fine now but personally if a consumer tried to tell me I wasn't entitled to my rights, it'd make me ever more determined to make sure I got them and i'd never shop there again.

OP - go to PC World and get what you want - repair/replacement or a full refund. Don't let them fob you off
 Think happy & you'll be happy

Hi Everyone
Thanks for the replies. I took it back to PC world today. They did try to encourage us to get a different laptop from them as the model I had was out of stock at all local pcworlds - but the only other one I liked was an ex-display so he gave us a refund without any problem at all.
I was very pleased with the service - just need a new laptop now!
