Nuffield Gymnasium

I have been a member of Canons gym for two years, it has recently been taken over by Nuffield. I did not think I was getting value for money, £44/month, pool always out of order, very limited parking, packed etc. etc. so decided to go to another gym. My membership ran out in March, I paid up until then and then cancelled my direct debit; I have since joined Top notch gym and am very pleased with it. Today I received a call from Nuffield, claiming that I owe them £51 (I assume this is a months fee, minus the reduction for membership), I am told that when I joined the gym, whoever spoke to me should have explained that I have to complete a cancellation form and unless I do, i will still be charged monthly. Is this right? Surely as my membership has lapsed, they cannot charge me for a service i mno longer use?
Apparently I will be getting a call from the 'General Manager'

This is a common problem when leaving a gym. It all depends what it says in the contract you signed when you joined. Some contracts are a minimum 12 month membership and will continue on a month by month membership until you give your one months notice. Dig out your original contract and see what it says. If it says minimum 12 months, then you're stuck. If it says a 12 month contract, with no recuring membership, you have an arguement to not pay the charge...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

You do actually have to cancel the membership and not just refuse to pay any more, just write to them and give them one months notice and that should be sufficient. Most gym memberships roll on after the 12 months.0

No don't just write. I cancelled a couple of months ago and a mate did recently and we had to go in and fill in a form with a manager watching you and asking questions. Then they tell you to cancel the direct debit after the last payment is taken.0
