Your brother needs to raise the issue with the Financial Ombudsman (last question on this page :

What was their response? When was the last time you asked them about hardship claim? Does he have priority debt arrears(mortgage/rent, utlilities, council tax)?sonyaparker wrote: »hi my brother is with nationwide and we worked out they owe him £3300 in charges.we have wrote several times to try to get the charges refunded but nationwide say the cases are on hold.we tried the hardship route as he has lost his job and is really struggling but they still wont pay anything, does anyone have any ideas on what to try now as he is getting desperate any help appreciated
Banks are looking at hardship claims specifically priority debt arrears. Without them, it is unlikely the FOS will have a different response.0 -

I think you should write into the nationwide asking for financial hardship.
Include this which is a common financial statement.

Furthermore, include copies of any priority debt arrears(mortgage/rent, council tax, utilities)?
Give them 14 days but also go to the ombudsman.0 -
My mum had the same - she was made redundant from Woolworths in January and she tried to claim nearly £4000 and they offered her £30 cos they said that was when she went into financial hardship. She then telephoned and said she had been in rent arrears for 3 years and they said they would review the matter. Just waiting to hear back from them now. Good luck with your claim0
