I used to brows the book shops and buy an armful of books every payday ... now I read all reviews, try from library first and if its still a must-have, try to buy a second hand copy

I used to buy shoes in several colours when I found a pair I liked ... now all my shoes are brown, flat and comfy :D

I used to spend a fortune in food shops and still often struggled to find something to make a meal with and threw away loads of food ... now I meal plan, keep a good store cupboard and waste very little
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

  • Interesting post!

    Here are mine:

I used to go into town on a day off with the express intention of spending money.I don't do that now,nor do I window shop or browse.

I used to use store cards and it would take me months to pay the sums off.I no longer use them.

I repair and mend items of clothing, even my umbrella when an attachment loop wore down. Before the item would have probably been put out.

I would wear just a cotton long-sleeved top in winter and complain of the cold! Now I dress more appropriately and in layers.

I used to not be mindful about the amounts I spent, and would be skint at the end of each month. Now I allow myself a fixed sum of money for each week.It works really well.

I used to spend a fortune on magazines and newspapers, but now I get my news and articles from websites and radio and my magazine "fix" when I go to the hairdressers.

I used to buy premium ranges of laundry (soap) powder and dishwasher stuff, but now I buy Tesco's or M&S' own makes which are just as good but half the price (and more frequent BOGOFs etc).

    I used to

buy a daily paper but now I don't need to I can get all the news I want from the 'net

spend money automatically in the supermarket, but now only buy what I really need, as opposed to what I think I need

buy all sorts of the latest gadgets for the kitchen
but now I think if I haven't needed one for 68 years there is no point me buying one now
    impulse buy,
but now always search the net first to see if I can get it cheaper,

I used to spend £30 every fortnight on magazines :o now I buy one mag a month.

I used to buy new shoes every time I had a bad day... now I go and look at expensive shoes and tut about how expensive they are - and buy in charity shops.

I used to book holidays on credit cards and worry about spending money when I came home, and the bill came in - now I haven't had a holiday at all for 3 years.

I used to spend £80-100 a month on CD's.... I've bought 2 CD's this year - one for OH and £5 one for me.

I used to spend £80 on a meal out for me and OH every week. Now it's about twice a year and I search for discount vouchers first.

I used to buy any food I fancied in the supermarket and end up chucking loads out. Now I meal plan and work out what meals will be cheaper.

I actually feel my life is happier now with less things - I just bought "stuff" to try and fill the emptiness I used to have.

Thank u! It's a quote, but means a lot to me. I've come accross it in various jobs I've done working with children/young adults and I think it's very apt :)

I must admit that magazines are my downfall. I subscribe to the monthly glossies - but do get them for dirt cheap, most are £1 an issue this way. This year I am going to give up buying my weekly gossip mags as I worked out this costs me £120 a year

  • I used to shop online every week or ten days
Now I plan and do one big shop a month and only buy anything fresh locally

I used to ignore all value brands
Now I have learnt to try and like some!

I used to throw away black bananas
Now I put in freezer and use for smoothies

I used to throw stuff in oven
Now I try and cook more than one thing at a time, maybe a pudding for the next day

I used to throw away manky celery and carrots
Now I chop up before bad and freeze to make soups.

I used to use expensive shaving foam
Now I use cheapo value baby lotion and does just as good.

I used to use expensive shampoo
Now Im trying out the cheapest shampoos and they are fine (but takes ages as only come in litre bottles)

Feels smug now didnt know had done so much in last year!

    what a good thread!

I use to spend around £30 on avon stuff each month - really just to give the avon lady some commision as she`s such a wonderful lady
stopped this almost 2 years ago and ive only just finished all the stuff i was buying,
Now i only buy from boots or £land the stuff i actully need & use.

I use to buy anything from the supermarket not thinking of what i actually needed
Now i do rough meal plans - pick meals rather than junk

I use to use up stuff in the freezer first and end up throwing out all the fresh stuff
Now i meal plan around the fridge items first

I use to nip to the shop every few days for milk & bread spending up £20 each time
Now i buy 1 large monthly shop & freeze plenty of bread & milk,

I use to pay for everything with my bank card
Now i take the cash out and any change goes in my copper jar,

We use to go out using the car more than needed wasting petrol
Now we plan were we need to go so were not wasting petrol
