Can someone explain mounting drives etc

I dont understand. I've been reading about using Daemon tools and virtual drives etc but I'm obviously being dense because I still dont understand. Why would you need a virtual drive for example...and what's 'mounting' something? 
Any thoughts would be great.

So you can copy an image of a cd/DVD to an iso file onto a hard disk, and then treat that as a real dvd - usually so you don't have to carry dvd's around with you0

Basically a copy of a CD / DVD can be made and saved to an .iso or .bin file. One way to open these files is to 'mount' then on to a virtual CV/DVD drive. You could alternatively burn it to a CD/DVD and then 'mount' it by simply inserting the disc. You wouldn't really call it mounting in the later use though.0
