When my son had an account with them the correspondence came addressed to him not to the parent. Is it possible that he has opened a letter and thrown it away.... or received a card and has already taken some money out? :eek:Torgwen..........

A couple of quickies as an ex-employee of Nationwide!
1. Re bags of change- The branches have a limit on change as they are not like the banks with a big vault, even city centre branches, and therefore do not have any facility to store a large amount of coins. So they usually say daily limit of 5 bags per customer max which must all be correctly bagged. It is a shame for the kids but if as the branches are on high streets they would have small traders bringing their takings in etc if they didn't have limits. There are/were also things in place like withdrawal limits of £1000 cash at a time unless you had pre-booked, for the same reason.
2. The Smart account leaflets have all the info about the passbook/card thing, this leaflet has the application form in so it is assumed you have looked at the leaflet before filling it in. It talks about it in the small print on the actual form too.
3. It is annoying but all banks and B Socs have to be pretty stringent with ID etc due to Money Laundering Regulations set by the Government. If you didn't have the right types of Id (lack of secondary ID maybe or lack of your ID as the guardian?) then they can't really bend the rules.
4. I do think however that they could have been a little more helpful. Was it your "home" branch? They could have advised you to visit there if not, or helped you come up with a solution. If it were me I would have been really apologetic but explain that I couldn't help for reasons XY and Z. Just to add, when I worked there we could in exceptional circumstances allow people with card accounts a withdrawal if they had no card, providing they had primary and secondary ID. However that could well have changed.
Sorry you have been disappointed by your branches poor customer service0 -
My kids have the Smart accounts with Nationwide as well. Like the OP we refused the offer of a card (for the same reason!) and continue to use the passbooks. You would expect the policy to be a nationwide one (groan) wouldnt you? Methinks the OP's branch have cocked up bigtime.Ellie
