Car Warranty

Hi all.

As a few of you will know I got a new car a few weeks ago. I have been looking at getting a warranty on the car but the thing is it is going to cost £350. I can't decide whether this is a good buy or if they aren't worth the paper they're written on. Obviously it won't cover things like break pads/discs and general wear and tear but say for instance my engine went without warranty I'm talking thousands.

Anyone had any experiences with these schemes? Or with warranty Direct personally?

Good and bad stories please :)

Thanks all.

PS. The car is an 01 reg 318Ci

How much did you pay for the car?

£5000. It has done 63k miles.

The main thing I'm worried about is that they will find a way to wiggle out of the warranty. Or the stuff the warranty covers is very rare to happen to a car.

I had a warrenty thrown in with a car. They offered me extra years for about that price. Car went back for repair under warrenty just lately. Worth having for piece of mind I would say. If I could go back to the day I bought the car I would have took the extra years.

Go exactly by the rules for the claims process, make sure you have taken the most comprehensive cover option so there is little to wriggle out from and warranty direct have happy customers around.
Be aware of the grace period for being able to claim, I think it might be no claims allowed in first 3 months.
My other online haunt is europes businest BMW owners forum. Reports of issues with diesels are pretty common, petrol engines virtually unheard of and when something comes up it tends to be cam sensors or lambda probes (aka O2 sensors) which are not expensive to fix. So my perception is 318Ci = bomb proof engine - low risk. I might not bother with a warranty on this car, if it was a diesel I would feel differently.

I've got a 3 month one on my new £2000 car, with some company that quite frankly I've read nothing good about. Since I've discovered a duff thermostat and a sensor issue, yet they say "if it may possibly have existed pre-sale, it's not covered", and they don't seem to cover cooling systems or ancillary electrics, I'd rather wipe my bum with it than even try and get them to cough.

It'll be disposed of and ignored. Damned if I can recall who it's with..big chain...http://warranties2000.co.uk/, that's them.

Not read good stuff about them at all. I've bought an Opel diagnostic system for £40, a sensor valve blanking plate for £2.50, and got the thing booked in for a 60k service, cambelt and thermostat change for £136, which resolves every issue and gives me peace of mind for 5 years or more, which this poxy warranty wouldn't.

After that 3 month period, it'll be 6 monthly home services, regular healthchecks on the diagnostics/laptop, 12 monthly autobox flushing, and what will break, will break.

Very true in most cases, however warranty direct publish a specific policy regarding wear and tear where they reduce the % paid out on parts costs in steps as the car goes beyond 60,000 miles.
