advice on reclaiming PPI

Hi,
I have been on a DMP for almost 3 years and today plucked up the courage to dig out all my old credit card statements with a view to reclaiming the charges they imposed.
On most of them (going back to 2001) there were PPI payments. Now my hubby and I cancelled all the PPI's when we realised we wouldn't be covered anyway as he was not in permanent employment. We didn't realise at the time though that we would be able to reclaim what we had already paid, as the PPI''s would never have covered us right from the outset.
Is it too late to reclaim now? I have all statements from 2001 onwards, so how far back could I go?
Any advice would be appreciated,

    Hi, thanks for your reply.

Is there no time limit then? I have all my statements to prove the payments that were made. I have printed off the stage 1 template letter from this site, but wonder if I should also send photocopies of my statements too? just in case the companies say they don't hold records that far back?

My hubby and I paid so much in worthless PPI that if I could claim even some of it back it would make a nice dent in our DMP!

I just wish I had started the ball rolling a long time ago, but I was in a dark place and just the sight of credit card statements had me almost hysterical. Last night when I dug my statements out, it was as if I was right back there, harassing phonecalls, intimidating letters etc, I started to get upset, then I got angry!! Many of my oen debts were catalogue ones, they knew I was a housewife at the time, so PPI should never have been added, it would never have covered me, but I paid it for years before I realised and cancelled it!! In fact, if the PPI payments were refunded, all my catalogue debts would disappear entirely!

I may be asking lots of questions on this journey,

    thanks again, :D

Don't send in copies of your statements unless they ask or they can't find your accounts (could happen if they have been closed long enough).

I don't know about every company but I'm sure they can't reject a claim because it was too long ago (within reason lol :p )

If the account is still open then its OK as they would have details (or should have details) and up to 6 years after it is closed. As regards the complaints procedure if this is a bank then mostly these would have been under FOS jurisdiction as they would have been under the old scheme of the banking ombudsman before the new ombudsman came into force.

    Hi,
some of the accounts are closed, I have 3 closed/paid off catalogues that charged various insurances that were worthless to me. My hubby has an MBNA one that was paid off in 2005, but the PPI payments went back to 2001, and the others are all current credit card, store card or catalogue accounts that are in my DMP.

Thanls for all your help, I am getting a bit overwhelmed by it all now. Thought about starting with the oldest closed accounts first, but not sure where to send the template letters to. Also do I have to send a payment with the template letter?

sorry for all the questions :o

FOr the ones that were closed as long as they were closed within the last 6 years they should be ok and also providing the company was regulated at the time of course then they should be ok.

The catalogue ones would most probably be trouble if they were opened before 14th january, 2005 as most were not regulated by anyone. I would always give them a go though and as regards any bank ones then as long as the accounts are still active and if they are closed then they were closed within the last 6 years they should be ok. The trouble here documents and how long they keep them but you have them anyway.

If you can find the times of the catalogue ones then we can perhaps give you advice here too.
