Ebay Postage

I have tried to list both DVDs and books on ebay, but seem to have come up against a maximum amount that they will allow for postage.

I could understand it if I were asking say £50 postage, but I am not. I wanted to ask the actual postal cost plus a pound for packing.

Does anyone know more about this?

I'm useless at forum searches as I always get the wrong things, but yes there are plenty of threads on this board about the 'new' rules (several months old now). You cannot charge postage on DVDs and books are capped at £2.75.

postage for dvds has to be free now

there is a limit on postage costs for books
  • Ok so you are an ebay seller who wants to sell dvd's but you can't charge for postage which means that you won't send it recorded because it easily wil cost £2 to send recorded delivery but if you don't send recorded then you don't get the seller protection because you didn't send it by a trackable method!!! GRRR! Ebay are going too far!

You can add the postage costs onto the item cost though and it is entirely voluntary whether you use recorded or not. All standard post is covered against loss up to £39 anyway, recorded or not.

    Thanks for everyones input.

The DVDs will be going to a charity shop, and so will all books that are much more than pamphlets.

"Fleabay", and thus PayPal, have just lost somewhere between 50 and 100 listings. I wonder how ebay got where they are today with sales strategy like this?

I've been selling on ebay recently and always list my items at £0.01 as it's incredibly rare for anything I sell to go for less than £2/3 anyway.

But a couple of dvd's I've listed have sold for 5p so I've made a loss on these as I can't charge postage for them. Nevermind, at least they aren't going to landfill but ebay seem to have made things very hard for sellers in the last couple of years. The 10% final value fee has shocked me too, when did that come in?

As for books, what if they're very heavy like a lot of hardback books are?

There are many ways around the compulsary free postage rule. just have a search through the categories and they'll become very apparant.

I dont sell DVDs on ebay but on other items i do list it often allows me to input an amount for insurance and then say with its optional for the buyer or theyhave to pay it, now ive never used it but does it allow this for dvds as if it does you could put the 75p recorded delivery charge as the insurance and the reminder of the charge is the free postage?

    can you do this?

Yes you can still add the 75p for insurance as an extra, however you can't make it compulsory so no one will pay it anyway.

This new ebay free postage annoys me! I sold a dvd for £2.30 which I wasnt happy with anyway but with free postage. After ebay and paypal fees I received £1.78! I bought an enevlope 30p and went to post it and it was over £1. So Im left with 70p in my pocket. its not worth the hassle Id rather charity shop them
Wins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.
