Insurance for learner drivers

Firstly, I will apologise if this question has previously been discussed but I could not find anything.

The question is What is the best/cheapest way to get insurance for a a child who is a learner driver to enable them to very occasionally drive my car for practise.

I tried getting a quote when I was getting quotes for my own renewal and I could not believe they wanted an extra £1,000 for a learner to drive a Ford Focus.

Any hints would be appreciated.

When i was learning, i brought myself a 1.2 Corsa, the insurance then was £1300 and i was a named driver on it...

Car insurance is horrible for us youngsters!
    Capital One - £230.46 / £70 (Nearly there)
    GE Money - £211.30 / £0 (There!)

The cheapest way will be to add the learner to your own policy, then remove them as soon as they pass.

Alternatively, you can insure them separately by the month via collingwood who have a special add on policy for learners to practice in their parent's car.

Just one bit of irrelevant advice from me..

Make sure they get their own policy after they pass, as i am paying for it now im 23 with still high premiums due to no 'no-claims'

This company have very low prices for learner drivers (They only cover you while you have a provisional licence)

    http://www.collingwoodlearners.co.uk/

They are registered in Gibralter though.

If you get a quote from Quinn Direct take into account that when you pass you test they will ask you to pay an additional premium that is around what their original quote was

Like dacouch says, it is always worth remembering that it is often a lot more expensive to add a newly passed young driver to a policy than a learner. Once my sons passed their tests we could no longer afford to put them on the insurance, so they went back to taking the bus.

  • My husband has tried to get insurance quote for my son (17) to learn to drive. The AA insurance quoted £8000 - what are they playing at? My husband drives a Vauxhall Vectra. We are thinking about buying a wee cheap car for him to practice on until he passes his test - what do you think?

When I passed my test (a few years ago now) I was quoted £1800 / year for third party only cover on a £250 ford fiesta!

I did my pass plus and the insurance quote dropped to around £750 (I think)

My insurance broker arrange a policy for my 17 year old son, when he was learning to drive, with Fortis Insurance and it was on a 3 month basis and it worked out at £42 per month. I think one of the stipulations was that he had to pass his test in the 3 months as I don't think it could be extended. It would be worth having a word with your insurance broker as they will be able to give you a bit better information..
