disability and home learning? D:

Options
Hi guys, I'm currently disabled and would love to do something with my time, ie a home learning course! It costs £430 and I'm not sure if there's anything to bring the price down since I'm disabled? I know you get SAAS if you actually go to college but unfortunately that's impossible at the moment for me.

P.s, does anyone know if the EDI certificates are even worth it? :S

Thanks! :)))

Have you checked out the OU? I am sure you can get courses free on there if you are on a low wage.

SAAS only pay for full time courses that are HNC level and above. The certificates you mention wouldn't get funding even if you went to college. You can get some money from the Individual Learning Account, if you go to college part time you may get a fee waiver and a travel and book allowance, it would also get you out to socialise which is no bad thing. Failing that you can get grants from the open uni and these courses are also home learning but they're real qualifications and not the mickey mouse things you see on telly that aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

Thanks for all the info Jen! :)

I'm just really confused about all these different qualifications and stuff.

I'd LOVE to go to college but sadly there's no way to do it, I suffer from a heart condition that makes me blackout after 5-10 minutes of walking and then I'm in a terrible state for the rest of the day! :P

Hopefully I can get a OU course then, I was sceptical about ICS etc :)

    I've PM'd you Milly.
  • Hi Milly not sure what courses you are looking for specifically but there is a lot out there free online if you keep Googling..my memory is pants so I can't remember where I have put all my bookmarks for this:rolleyes:;)
I found a copy of community colleges that have been set up for locals to use but you can join in too..
and OU also have a whole host of free courses on a linked website
    but otherwise
    1. Leonard Cheshire funded me to do Clait online .-they might be worth checking if you have a specific course you want to do or are interested in a computer course ?

    2. I can study online at home for computer ECDL via my local college ..and I know there are plans through Adult Ed and the college to extend the courses.

    3. Another local college also offered distance learning courses
Both the college courses were funded for peopel on benefit or disability etc through Social Fund and Learning and Skills Council..so they would also be worth checking

    4. Failing that, local LEA best time to apply for any money now being beginning of financial year, then next stop there is a large tome of grant offering organisations via Charities you could hunt through..local libray should be able to give you access to that or links for it..or someone here could be clearer than me :D

For people older than yourself U3A do some great online courses on lots of varied leasure topics for about £15 plus local membership fee and you will be linking with people all over world on that which is fun.

Good luck I'm sure you will find something :o
