funnily enough i did mine today.I had full no claims and the new insurer just asked for proof of this when i got it. On cancelling my old one i just asked them to send confirmation of this through the post.

    Hi guys and girls,

A quick question , how do no claims bonus work?

I have built up a No Claims Bonus as a named driver with an insurance company, can I take that NCB to another insurance company?

If so, how? Do I just state how many years NCB I have? How do they confirm it? Otherwise that would be open to abuse right?

    Thanks in advance

Does the insurance company you are with allow the name driver to build up a no-claims bonus?

Sorry if Ive missed this, but have you mentioned when youre insurance is due for renewal? Most companies will only send out the renewal form around 3-4 weeks before the end of your policy. The renewal will tell you how much your current insurer will charge you for the next years insurance and SHOULD note how many years no claims bonus you have.

With regards the 5 years maximum bonus, som companies will only take into consideration up to five years, wheras others will give you a bigger discount. This really all depends on the company, but Id say if youve now got more than fiver years, you should go to a company offering discounts for higher NCD's.

If your renewal doesnt state how much NCD you have when it comes through, just phone your current insurer and ask for proof of how many years you have, and they will send it through to you.

thanks for that, my questions is, they are asking for a £180 odd pound fee for "error" above, if i dont pay, can they legally refuse to send out proof of my current NCB so far? so that i can go to another insurer?

Hmmm, interesting question. Honestly, I dont know. However, every right thinking part of me says that a company cant charge you for an error of their making (Im not saying they wont try, but cant see how they can hold you to ransom like that).

I dont know what the legal standpoint on proof of no claims is, although if you speak to any new insurance company and explain the situation, Im sure they would have other ways of confirming your no claims period.

If you get no more luck on here, then Id suggest speaking with your local Citizens advice bureau. They would be able to tell you exactly what the score is...

How did you get the quote that has your son down as a spouse, was it on the internet or over the phone

the original insurance application was carried out over the internet.
im certain this was filled out correctly, certainly when the policy came through the first time, there was no mention on the policy of my son being my spouse in relation to me!

am i able to wait untill my insurance with current providers elapses and will they "automatically" send out and NCB confirmation letter to me? or do i have to call them?

Technically they are not supposed to with hold the no claims bonus.

Its sounds to me like the mistake about your son was caused by you keying the wrong information in which is one of the problems with buying insurance over the internet. So unless you can get them to waive the charge which I doubt they will you will be liable for it.

There is a very very small chance their was a fault with their website although I doubt it.

Please bear in mind that additional drivers are not entitled to no claims bonus with all Insurers so before you commit yourself to a policy make sure the company you have chosen will accept no claims bonus for an additional driver
