Back in the mid nineties, when I was temping for a while @ £15 per hour, most of the agencies used to accrue holiday pay on top, and then pay it to you at the end of the assignment. When I started temping again in 2003, the agencies then started to pay me an inclusive rate of £14 - £15 per hour, which included my holiday pay. Because I was often responsible for paying the agency invoices, I noticed that they were charging the client between £25 and £27 per hour for my services.
So, to sum up, my pay (and that of many others) has not increased in 15 years, whilst the agencies make a mint out of us.
Agencies are leeches, unfortunately the majority of people who are not self employed have to use them.

I was informed by Hays staff that they brought this system in to help temps with cash flow. .

It helps Hays with their cash flow - especially if temps don't remember to claim their holiday (and yes there can be reasons why temps don't ask).

It was introduced not because they were thinking of the temps who are being patronised as though they are unable to budget but because statutory holidays were introduced in the late 1990s.

The problem is in agencies who quote a rate inclusive of an allowance for holidays - which looks as though that agency is paying more for work than another agency which is being more straightforward in its dealings.

Hays have in effect reduced their major outgoing (Labour costs) by 10% or you could look at it another way they have reduced their overdraft by 10%.

    Great business for them
  • Not only do Hays take holiday pay from your hourly rate - currently 10.77%, they also make you pay tax on private motoring expenses which are tax exempt. They also take a 12.5% cut of the actual mileage rate too! E.g. The business I work for pays 40p per mile for private mileage but Hays only give me 35p and take tax of it too. They are an absolute shower of gits.
