Benefits and bank charges (TSB)

Hello. Asking for my friend who is on incapacity benefit. He had a paypal payment taken out on a weekend, so he couldn't have gone into a branch to pay some money in. He was overdrawn by only a couple of pounds.
He put money in the following Monday. Then he got a letter saying he would be charged, and they took £27 from him. He went into his local branch and they refused to give him the money back, even though he told them he his only income is benefits.

Will he be able to claim it back by writing to them instead?

thanks for any help.

It makes no difference to the issues that the source of income is benefits.

They will need to follow the standard reclaim bank charges approach since benefit is treated as income when it hits the bank accout.

I agree with the last 2 response, once benefit is received it can have charges taken from it. What you could try is asking for the charge to be refunded as a goodwill gesture, most banks do this for the first transgression.

Thanks for the help. i thought that benefits couldn't be taken
    Must have mis-read that bit.

I will do them a letter (they are dyslexic and need help reading and understanding letters)

The local branch refused outright to even look into a refund.

    Thanks again!

Can you confirm that he paid money in on the Monday and the debit was on the saturday/sunday on the account? What time on the Monday did he go in?
Is it the first charge that they have had on the account? As NatWest has said, they're maybe another way :D
