Cheapest International Transactions

in Credit cards
Afternoon
I have a work trip to the US soon, and plan to do some personal shopping whilst over there.
Does anyone have a view as to which credit card to use that either doesn't get an international transaction charge (for purchases) or is low?
I was in France recently and got billed huge for each transaction I paid for. I don't mind (well do, but knew) about the charge for withdrawing cash. But making a purchase annoys me.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Nationwide has no loading in the US as described in "The cheapest way to spend overseas"
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1106765397,71685,
You should not have been getting charged a huge amount per transaction, it should have been a set %age loading. Unless you were only making very large purchases (which seems unlikely) or withdrawing cash which is just about the most expensive way to do things.0 -
Nationwide debit/cash card for withdrawals and Nationwide credit card for purchases: The cheapest way to spend overseas: save 6%
P.S. However, be aware of Direct Currency Conversion: credit card exchange rate in Spain , DCC and ATMs abroad: for the attention of Nationwide card users0 -
I have been using Nationwide's Classic.
They don't charge anything for international purchases although they do charge for cash withdrawals -though I'm not sure if its a charge plus interest or just interest per day until you repay the cash.0 -

This couldn't have come at a better time, because I too am going to NY and this cleared up all my questions. AND I have a Nationwide Classic!! Yippee"When you want something said, ask a man.
