Hi all :hello:
Im moving into a completly new build property on the 18th May and i was wondering how i go about setting up gas and electric? It may seem like a stupid question but atm as far as im aware there is no supplier?? and all i was told but the HA was that it was my responsibilty to set up and pay utility bills (currently only have electric on a meter so this is all new to me)
Thanks in advance

firstly i would ask the HA if they have any meter details as generally new builds have not been registered correctly or show up as results therefore when you ring an energy company it wont show up as the correct address format. take down the serial numbers from both the gas and ele meters, that will certainly help as whichever energy company you are with will be able to search this to establish whether or not they are the supplier. as above check with the HA to see if they have meter details as generally the energy companies look for what they call mprn - gas and mpan - ele.
and you will more than likely already have an energy supplier but just dont know it. it would have been registered by the builders with a company so i would suggest try and find the above out first before considering to switch suppliers as i gather you are under enough stress moving!!!
hope this helps.0 -
thank you i will ask the HA tomorrow at the open day

To have an electrity meter fitted a supplier would have to have been appointed. Therefore the HA or the builder should be able to supply you with this information. There may also be a tag on the meter that indicates your MPAN which you can use to contact the distribution business and ask you the current supplier is.
RULE No. 1 - Read both meters when you move in and ideally photograph them (this will have a time stamp on) you should then ensure your accounts are opened to this reading and you are not charged for anything thats beeen used before you move in.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Thank you, i have been told that on hand over of the building from the builders to the HA they let all utility companies know the dates people are moving in, and then a few wks later we will all recieve "welcome to your home" packs aparently from the providers on how to set up bills etc. But i will def take a photo when we move in of the meter0

I would ask the HA who the utility providers are and contact them yourself with the respective meter readings.
