I have 2 phones working from a socket, which is difficult to get at. neither phone has a function for silent ring, so we are unplugging from rear of phones at night as OH sleeps in that room because of my nose noise;). today we broke the retaining clip on the plug in socket, not a prob as we have a spare lead. what i would like to do is put a on / off switch in the phone line. Can I, what would i need . thanks

I would have thought any old switch would work... All a switch does is make and break contacts... Something like this, maybe: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=2340

I'm not sure whether you're legally allowed to connect your own equipment to the PSTN (public switch telephone network), even a tiny switch...

Technically I think you probably can't because it would need to be an approved device as suggested above.

Could just get a short phone extension lead, sit the socket on the table and unplug it with that? The BT plug end is probably easier to unplug than the phone end and less liable to snap.

Not had a BT line for years but they used to put a loud siren sound down it eventually if you did that called the "howler". Do they still do that anyone?

I'm guessing the poster wants to still have the phone enabled in another room possibly, just not in the room where someone is sleeping.

I'm sure you could buy a bog-standard phone with a ring on/off switch for little more than a fiver.

Why not just take the 'phone off the hook and try... They do by the way, and if you keep doing it, they'll flag a fault on your line.

Buy a nice cordless base station and a couple of handsets. Can be moved from bedroom, individually switched on/off and work as an intercom. Lots of other features as well.

My Panasonic KX-TG 8321 (link) cordless has a night mode, and I can choose the hours which I don't want the cordless to ring.

I think they do, I get it every now and again when I mis-press the button and don't hang up.
