Lawn Dead - Next Step

I think the old grass just died from age/lack of care and attention.

We took over the house from a couple who where seriously gardening challenged, the lawn was about 2ft high and even though we chopped it down, fed it and tried to improve it over the years it really just never recovered it was alive, but it was always thick with straw like grass mixed in with the green.

I think where just going to even it off and re-sow and hope for the best, hopefully the new lawn with regular attention will fair better.

The raised beds are another matter entirely though, i've managed to build the beds they are about 6" deep now, but the soil benieth them is pretty awful, im sure most plants will be hardy enough to fight though the rocks etc and find some nutriants (though i think my carrot idea is out the window haha)

i want to fill them with something decent so there is good nutrients etc close to the surface, but they are pretty huge and i think filling them with decent compost isn't very feasable money wise.

Any ideas?? i know you can buy topsoil anyone know a good place thats reasonably priced, or is compost the way to go??

Getting to the point now where i really just need this done so i can plant all my seedlings out cause it's getting VERY crowded on my windowsills and in my mini greenhouse.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Might be worth advertising on freecycle.

I bought some top soil from a local supplier - will never use them again, they supplied in tonne bags and had actually topped each bag with one foot of top soil - covering very poor subsoil! I was fuming but they refused to do anything about it.

It didn't bear any resemblance to the soil I examined at their store.

I think you are better off finding someone who is digging out foundations for a conservatory/extension.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
